** Wild Ginger - Downtown

The food at Wild Ginger spans the Pacific Rim from China to Indonesia. We pride ourselves on offering traditional dishes from these distinctive regions and insist on house-made ingredients. Chefs make spicy chili sambals, fresh coconut milk, delicate egg noodles, and our pungent oyster sauce all from scratch. To achieve the sublime flavors of the East, there is no substitute for the time-honored customs of these rich and ancient cultures.

Wild Ginger may be the most poorly managed restaurant in Seattle. We’ve been to the restaurant 3-4 times a year for the past 5 years; its proximity to Benaroya Hall (across the street) is the only reason we keep going back. Each time we go we have a reservation. Each time we arrive on time. Each time there is a mass of people standing around the entrance. And each time there are many open tables, just waiting for diners to be seated. And each time there is a team of 3 hosts/hostesses standing at the host station. One is sorting menus, one is playing on an iPad, and one -literally - is just standing around. All while 25+ patrons with reservations are just waiting to be seated (again) at one of the many open tables which they have reserved. Tonight was exceptional. Arrived on-time for our reservation. Waited 20 minutes to be seated, during which time I watched intently the check-in process. It literally takes the hostess 11 taps on an iPad and two conversations with her colleagues to decide which table to seat people with reservations. After that - no action; just three hosts standing around… until they decide to seat you. It’s maddening. Even more so given they know all these patrons have a performance to attend at Benaroya Hall. The kitchen is also a disaster. Tonight we waited 35 minutes for our appetizers…. One of which never came… and had to dash out before our entrees arrived because we had to catch a 7:30pm concerned Benaroya Hall. The waitstaff itself is outstanding; their jobs are made difficult by the horrible management team and complete process failure of the host staff and the kitchen . Tonight I lost it and finally insisted to speak to the manager. To his credit he comped our (partial) meal, which we appreciated. Still, the experienced ruined the mood of our evening. We’ll never go back.

Always special and an elevated experience. We love Makenzie for the intimacy but the flagship excellent.

Food was very good but took a long time for it to come to our table. Go for a long leisurely evening.

The food and service is good , but we were seated by some closet of their frequent use, and so it was not so pleasant when they had to go through there during our meal.

I chose this restaurant simply because the description sounded interesting to me. We wanted to eat out for Thanksgiving and the more traditional places were either closed or closed to further reservations. There were some TG-ish options available, but we decided to go Asian for the meal. We had the Seven Elements soup (a Thai take on chicken noodle soup with a curry flavor and crunchy noodles on top) as the starter, the Green Curry Chicken, and the Assam Prawns. Everything was delicious! I was impressed that the last section of the shell had been removed from the prawn while leaving the tail in place. The restaurant sits on the corner of 3rd and Union, but the entrance is farther down 3rd Ave than I expected. Signage on the sidewalk or hanging above the sidewalk would be helpful. We found a parking lot about a half-block away; evening parking rate was $10.

Our server was so kind. And then she brought out the most amazing food. Our favorites were the soup (it was simply perfect) and the sumptuous Hong Kong prawns. This was so worth a trip to Seattle. I can’t wait to come back.

We always love going to Wild Ginger. The food is always exquisite and although the price seems a bit high, we always get large portions and end up taking some home which makes another meal at home!
