The world famous Walnut Room has been a Chicago tradition since 1907. Located on the 7th floor of Macy's on State Street, the Walnut Room was the first restaurant ever opened in a department store. Conveniently located in the heart of the Chicago theater district, the Walnut Room is an excellent choice to take a break from shopping or for a meal and a glass of wine before the show.
Enjoy our Famous Mrs. Herring's Chicken Pot Pie and other well known favorites on the menu.

We come every year to eat by the tree. We always have great service but today was ridiculously bad. It took almost 2 hours for lunch because our server would disappear for like 20 minutes at a time. She’d drop our drinks, wait 20 minutes. We’d order a drink, 20 minutes later. She asked us how things were with our food and then came back after we had been finished for like 20 minutes and asked us where our food was. My husband ordered another drink and she gave us the bill and never brought the drink. Then as we were about to pay and tell her to just take it off, she brought it….15 minutes later and it was totally watered down because the ice melted. She also said she packed my son’s mug in the bag with our to go stuff and it wasn’t in there. My husband usually doesn’t go with us but he said this is the last time we’ll go because it was such a disaster. It sucks to pay $145 for 3 people and have such terrible service.

We had a great experience! We had the pot pies and lobster bisque. It was the first time in a ling time where there were actual chunks of lobster in the soup. The Caesar salad was good too!

Holiday brunch was good. Food was buffet style with a nice selection, if a little limited. Good sausage and hash browns but French toast was soggy. Not sure I will do it again but enjoyed the experience sitting by the big tree.

Overall, it was nice to see the tree. However, I feel like this experience was way overhyped. I had a reservation for 6pm and arrived to the line at 5:45pm. We didn't sit until almost 6:25pm. With two small kids, this was a bit of a nightmare. The service wasn't bad but wasn't exactly good either. The food was decent, but not memorable. I had no idea about the "fairies" and was kind of caught off guard by them, also by the fact that one of fairies stepped behind our kids while we tried to take a picture of the tree in background (completely blocking the tree). She then proceeded to smile at us and tried to join our picture, and then continued to talk to some other kids at the table while blocking the tree. It was awkward and rude. As a Chicagoan, I'm glad I gave this a try but this is a one and done experience for me and my family. I don't understand the hype.

We had a wonderful time at the Walnut Room. The Christmas decorations are lovely, the restaurant was bustling and busy, and staff were friendly. We had a variety of food and desserts, and all were delicious! Even though it was busy, our meals came out quickly and the service was great! I highly recommend making reservations well in advance if you want to dine here.

Beautiful dinner under the tree! The service was a little slow and the food mediocre, but you can’t beat the ambiance.
