Located in the Old Engine House on the edge of York's Museum Gardens in a riverside setting close to the historic Lendal Bridge, The Star Inn The City has an enviable position, which we aim to match with the best produce God's Own Country has to offer and genuine Yorkshire hospitality for the 'whole package'.

We offer an all day menu which can be enjoyed for both lunch and dinner, as well as serving up breakfast Friday to Sunday, and on Sunday's we serve up our famous Sunday roasts between 12-4pm.

We pride ourselves on being a a food-led celebration destination, with guests being able to enjoy view of the River Ouse from our Garden Room or outside on our riverside terrace. For more intimate occasions we also offer two exclusive Private Dining rooms for celebrations such as graduations, weddings and birthdays.

    The service was good and the setting was lovely. We had nibbles (bread and olives) instead of a starter. I had trouble choosing what to have, nothing jumped out at me as anything I really wanted to try (we were also given a specials menu, but it was very similar to the main menu), I asked the waiter for his opinion between the ox cheek and the chicken, he said the ox cheek is his favourite thing on the menu, although he said it’s very rich, it was indeed very rich, I’m not sure what the puréed vegetable underneath it was, but I wasn’t overly keen, and didn’t eat all of my meal, maybe some fresh vegetables to go with it would’ve made it more palatable. We shared a bottle of nice red wine and had some port and a liqueur coffee. A service charge was added to the bill. We thought it was quite expensive for a catch up lunch for 2 - just under £200, but that was probably our own fault for liking the port (the best part of the meal for me!) so much. Nice to go somewhere I’ve never been before, but I’m not in a hurry to return.

    I would have liked more choice of vegetables as sides. It was 9 pm and there was a baby shrieking in the restaurant. Otherwise all good.

    What can I say. We visited again this year as we come to York for a weekend every December and the food and service was superb. The quality of the food is first class and the service was second to none. The waiter Sebastian kept us informed on the foods on the menu and was so helpful the whole time we were there. Just wish there was a table available so we could have had another couple of drinks after our food. I would seriously recommend this place to everyone I know.
