Located right in the heart of the town's High Street and Citadel, The George Grill is the restaurant of The George in Rye, one of the finest hotels on the South coast. Our head chef, Oscar, offers you a classic British Grill menu combining his love of charcoal cooking with a Latin twist. The Grill is a firm local favourite and celebrates the best of ingredients and suppliers in the area. At the heart of the kitchen is a wood-charcoal grill, where our kitchen team roast seafood landed that day from fishermen based in Rye Harbour. We also serve Romney Marsh lamb, Aberdeen Angus grass-fed beef and seasonal vegetables from our farmer based in Boughton Monchelsea. Lovingly restored and renovated, this Grade II listed bolt-hole offers a welcoming retreat for design lovers and foodies alike.

I think the dining room (the top area) is pretty boring and stale, our steaks weren’t cooked according to order, we all ordered medium but they were all well done (we didn’t complain as we didn’t want to make a fuss), also the seasonal veg we guessed were cooked in or with mustard which wasn’t mentioned on the menu and we aren’t mustard fans.
We still had a lovely evening

excellent service and lovely food, only criticism would be that the lunchtime menu might be a bit limited for some.
Scallop week in Rye so had to have them and they were superb.

Booked the table 2 months ago to celebrate a 60th birthday. We have stayed at The George on many occasions and have always found it to be excellent.
We arrived on time and one of us went to tell the restaurant reception that we were here, we were ignored by 4 members of staff, when one had the decency to acknowledge us, we were told to wait in a very dismissive manner.
We went to the bar, which is excellent, brilliant atmosphere and great staff.
We returned to the restaurant only to be told that our table had to be in the ‘bar area’ next to loads of people coming in and out and also getting the good old blast of cold air every time the front door was opened. I complained that we would be forgotten sitting at our table and that considering we booked over 2 months ago, it was very poor planning that we would not be welcome or allowed to eat in the restaurant!
The waiter we had was a really lovely young man who did everything he could, however, we had to wait an hour for our starters! The menu is not very clear and is also very limited which was really disappointing.
I spoke with the restaurant ‘manager’, who to be honest did not appear to care about my complaint or offer any solutions to the massively disappointing performance of his kitchen. I would say that providing a ‘free drink on the house’ is not the answer to a complaint or to camouflage such awful performance. We didn’t need a free drink, we wanted to be assured that the things will improve and have the comfort of knowing that next time we book to stay in the hotel, the same performance result will not happen again. None of us were!
Such a shame, it truly was one of our favourite places to eat and stay, pre the dreadful devastating fire. Alas, no longer!

Dear Peter,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We're truly sorry to hear that your special celebration did not live up to the high standards you've come to expect from The George. It’s disappointing to know that the initial welcome, table allocation, and service fell short, especially for such an important occasion. While we’re pleased to hear you enjoyed the bar and received great service from your waiter, the long wait for food and lack of attentiveness to your concerns are certainly not the experience we want for our guests.
Your feedback is invaluable, and we will be addressing these concerns with our team to ensure improvements are made.We completely understand your disappointment and we sincerely hope we have the opportunity to restore your confidence in the future.

Very disappointing. No warmth, welcome or charm here. It wasn’t obvious where to check in for dinner, and we felt awkward and in the way. Once seated ( and just given large choice - sit where you want attitude) We weren’t asked if we wanted a drink. Finally just asked were we ready. Some better training needs to be given to this Manager.
The food was adequate but not stunning, especially given the price. As soon as we had finished our main course, we were asked about the dessert - no rest!
We are very discerning about restaurants, having experienced very many and this didn’t come up to scratch at all.

Dear Pat,
Thank you for your feedback. We're truly sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet your expectations. It’s concerning to hear that the welcome and service felt lacking in warmth, and that you didn’t feel well taken care of from the start. We understand how important it is for guests to feel comfortable and well-guided, especially when dining.
We appreciate your honest comments about the food and service, and we will certainly use your feedback to help improve the training and overall guest experience. We hope that, despite this visit, you’ll consider giving us another chance to provide the exceptional experience you deserve.
Warm regards

The staff were really really good. The only disappointment was the dessert menu which had only three choices, cheese, ice cream or crumble. For a prestigious restaurant like The George's I was surprised and felt this was very disappointing.
