Came here as a birthday dinner date for my significant other. (Won’t make that mistake again). Though I included “Birthday” in the reservation there was no greeting from hostess or waiter (who even checked his ID for alc). Normally I wouldn’t be too picky about that but at the price point and considering they are clearly going for a fine dining vibe… could have done better with that on the service side. The food ranged from inedible to alright. The miso soup we were served was the worst thing we ate here, and for $6 that’s outrageous. Hole in the wall japanese restaurants can nail miso soup for literally a third of that because it is really just 3 ingredients. It was so salty and it was made evident by the bronze color that instead of making miso soup the way most would, the chef added soooo much soy sauce. Since this was the first course, it fried my taste buds making the other foods I ate afterwards taste even worse. The highlight of my meal was the braised short rib, though I think the veggies that accompanied it could have been prepared in a more interesting way texturally (it was all mushy, albeit yummy mush). My partner enjoyed his dragon roll. As for service, they didn’t do so great either. The plate of edamame we ordered was served thoughtlessly piled high in a small bowl with a bigger bowl for shells, so when we grabbed edamame we knocked over some from the overfilled bowl. Plates were not cleared as we ate our courses. My Braised beef was served a good 15 minutes before the dragon roll my partner ate, making an awkward pace. Waited for 10 minutes after we were completed eating until a waiter paying attention came near our table so we could ask for the check. Understaffed perhaps? I don’t dine much in Walnut Creek and maybe there isn’t much competition for japanese food here but wow I can’t believe how bad it was for a $120+ dinner date.

It was a very nice environment. They played some mellow pop while I was there. I was not a huge fan of the seating arrangements kinda some smaller tables high chairs. The rainbow roll however was amazing and a few of the other rolls I got were great too. The waiter was very nice and food came out pretty fast

Here’s an enhanced version of your review: We arrived early, around 5:45 PM, to avoid the holiday dinner rush. Unfortunately, the restaurant seemed short-staffed, which impacted the overall experience. Our server, who appeared to be managing multiple tables on her own, was attentive but understandably stretched thin. It would have been helpful if we had been informed upfront that our sashimi would take 40 minutes to arrive. Better communication and preparation could have made the experience more enjoyable.

Very few vegetarian options and they were not that good. They were not flexible with modifications which was difficult for the vegetarians. The Santorini sales people were annoying as they kept coming over to our tables. . We had to ask for water to be provided which was unfortunate. The food was very expensive given the small quantities.

The food was just okay but the portions were noticeably smaller than in previous times. Each of the four of us ordered our own entree’ and they were served one at a time with a 10-15 minute wait before the next order came. So, it was eating alone while everyone watched and waited to be served. We probably won’t go back anytime soon. Our server was very nice and attentive so maybe it was the kitchen’s fault.

Something was a little off. Not quite what I have come to expect from Sasa. Our waitress was very sweet but …. We got the wrong drinks served a few times and some of the dishes we ordered were missed in the initial order.

It made me sad to see my favorite restaurant was not the same. It’s been sold recently and the fabulous chef has apparently left because the food was not the same quality. The agedashi tofu was bland had no taste. The portions have shrunk they use paper napkins instead of cloth. Our server tried hard but the wait for drinks was long and he seemed to be managing many tables. Server shortages? I’m sad to see this happen to one of our favorite restaurants
