About this restaurant

Rasa, which translates to taste and feeling in Malay, offers a combination of old and new flavors and of home and street inspired cooking. Siblings and co-owners, Tommy Lai and Camie Lai grew up in a small village an hour north of Kuala Lumpur and they draw upon culinary skills they developed cooking with their mother that combine Malaysia's legendary street food and "choo char," a style of cooking that is also unique to Malaysia. Offering 52 seats in a restaurant in the heart of the Greenwich Village, Rasa offers distinct brunch and dinner menus. Try traditional Malaysian dishes like Kampung Fried Rice and Hainanese Chicken Rice or chef specialties like Fried Chili Chicken or Stink Beans with Shrimp. Rasa offers a special Sunday prix fixe meal that includes a beverage, appetizer and an entrée.

I have never before written a negative review of a restaurant, because I've worked in the industry and know bad nights happen. Until eating at Rasa, I have been able to forgive that; nobody is perfect. My date told the waiter she had a shellfish allergy and couldn't eat anything with shellfish. We were eating the food and she noticed her lips were swelling up and getting tingly. Eventually she had to use an Epi-pen and we spent the night at the hospital. The waiter told us that he had conveyed the shellfish allergy to the kitchen. If he did, this is perhaps more concerning, because it means the kitchen doesn't pay attention to food allergies and could have cooked the food in a contaminated pan. While the allergic reaction was rising, a waitress kept coming over and asking if my date was OK, despite clear visual signs she was not. It was a panicked reaction that didn't help the situation. Our waiter voided our bill, but that certainly doesn't come close to covering the costs of the hospital visit.

Great lunch specials. Beef rendang was so-so and a bit pricey for $19 and a small-ish serving .

Had a variety of dishes including Thai and Japanese and Indonesian.......wanted more Malaysian options . The Malaysian curry was good stuff though. Gave me a good taste of Malaysian food and was pleased with the food. The serving staff on a weekend were attentive so much so that every time I just looked around for something they were responsive. Would come again for quality of food and service.

The owner is so friendly and the food was delicious! I went with 8 other people, originally I had a smaller reservation but they let me add a couple of extra people at the last minute and were very considerate. Friendly staff and amazing drinks! I definitely recommend the Lychee Daiquiri. All around great night!

Food at Rasa was great. The place was fun and energetic. However, if you have a tight schedule, the restaurant might not be the place for you. Even though we had a reservation, we were kept waiting for over 45 minutes. While we were happy that Rasa had a full house, the hostess was unapologetic about the delay. (And the funny thing was Opentable still had available reservations for slots while the restaurant was packed.) Not sure about the business practice!
