The Belgian Monk opened in December 2000. The main objective was to create something different yet to fit in with the way drinking and dining is changing. It has become a successful and established bar and restaurant, offering customers a choice of a regular selection of some 45 beers together with a selection of special beers. The menu is based on serving only the best products available freshly prepared daily, at realistic prices, in an informal relaxed "friends and family" atmosphere. It provides more than just the meal or drink but a whole Belgian experience. Now owned and run by Wursty Four Biers Ltd the new owners hope to take this fantastic venue to new heights and enhance the service style and offer. Sincerely not to be missed!

We came a few weeks ago had pork belly which was disappointing couldn't cut the crackling and was worried trying to eat it would damage teeth. We decided to visit again and try the pork belly again sadly they had no pork belly available. So picked another dish. It took a while to get our drinks , food took a while to arrive when it did the onion rings were missing from the burger it also took a while to get the bill. It seemed like the people downstairs didn't matter and the staff were only focused on the Christmas party upstairs. To say the whole experience was disappointing is putting it lightly. Really was not impressed and we won't be going back anytime soon.

They had warned us that there was a wait on food which was very polite as actually the wait was fine we thought. Very attentive and friendly staff. Lovely meal. Lovely ambiance (be it a little hard to speak due to noise levels which were not by any means awful just fairly busy so hard to hear each other). We had a lovely evening. Thank you. Always have a lovely evening here

It took them 1 hour to serve humus and olives starter and another whole hour to serve our main. They had no excuse - saying they had “new chefs with their own ideas of timings” but being heavily pregnant, we nearly walked out it was so ridiculous a wait but it was saturday night and we wouldn’t have found food anywhere else either. By the time the food came it was average. The chairs are super hard and uncomfortable - but maybe if you aren’t waiting 2 hours for your food, you wouldn’t notice so much.

Arrived for our annual Christmas meal with friends was told was a little delay with food which was no problem. An hour and a half later starters turned up which were awful snd the mussels had nothing in half the shells and sauce like water. We appreciate the chef had walked out that night which we heard someone saying in the toilet but the assistant manager was very rude even when we booked in and when we said we had be waiting she replied ‘alright alright’ great customer service!!! I would like to say Jacob the young waiter was so polite and lovely a credit to him. We walked out in the end before our mains as we would have missed our train home. Shame as first time we had eaten in there and were all looking forward to it and will never go back again !!!!

A very unique place that gives you a taste of the Belgium culture. Food took a while to come after ordering but was absolutely worth the wait. The younger staff were very respectful, the older staff can learn a few things from them. The older Lady was rude to other customers too. Overall very very nice place…

I have never had a Tartlefette before and oh my days I want more! I was so full I couldn’t make it to pudding next time I will! Thank you for great service and great food. The beers were delicious too.

Food was good, however I felt it was expensive for what we got. Beer is expensive but enjoyable. Service was friendly but pre-adding 12.5% service charge annoys me so I always ask for it to be removed and then don't leave any tip where I may have done if it wasn't automatically added. It's a shame people have to sit outside if they just want a drink.

We booked dinner at the Belgian Monk as part of our daughter’s birthday present as we had previously enjoyed a meal there and thought she would like it. We booked a table for 7.15, arrived on time and we were welcomed in a pleasant manner. We were shown to our table and advised that as there were a couple of large groups dining there would be a slight delay in getting our food. We ordered and the drinks and olives we chose arrived promptly. We then waited and waited and waited for our main courses to arrive. After almost an hour and a half I decided to find someone and check on the situation as it was by now 8.40. I spoke to a female member of staff in a non aggressive manner and was curtly informed that the large groups, coupled with only having two chefs in was causing the delay. I asked if she could check and give me an estimated time for getting our food and she told me that wasn’t possible and I would just need to be patient. At this point the guy who had served us originally, probably feeling embarrassed went to check and said the food would be with us in 5 - 10 minutes, and it was. We had ordered the signature dishes of the restaurant, I had ordered moules mariniere and my wife and daughter tartiflette, neither of which are haut cuisine, basically posh fast food. So having waited an hour and a half I received mussels which were appalling, minuscule and overcooked and the tartiflette was also shockingly poor. I don’t like to write such negative reviews, especially as hospitality is finding things so difficult at the moment but this experience was dreadful. Had we have been advised about the situation in the kitchen we could have eaten elsewhere and a celebratory dinner would not have been spoiled. The attitude of the staff member who I approached to find out an ETA for our food was disgraceful. I must say that in this condemnation I do not include the guy and young lady, apparently on her first day, who served at our table as they were fine.
