The BEST way to experience Tanoshii for two people is to order signature "fish and chips" appetizer and 3 Mike's special rolls. (Chefs choice)

Tanoshii is often referred to as serving the best sushi in Chicago for over 13 years, crafting fresh Japanese classics in its bright eatery. For delicious starters signature appetizers "fish and chips" and "truffle rose" are highly recommended.

Tanoshii’s owner Mike Ham who's also a master sushi chef offers dishes renowned for their deft of fresh ingredients, and omakase dishes. Omakase in different words means chef choice. Chef uses fresh fish for the day and uses their creativity to deliver you the best sushi experience.

Tanoshii has been reviewed in the Our Chicago Food Blog and the Chicago Reader. Its welcoming setting features a sushi bar and take-out services

I love Tanoshii, I've been coming here for about 18+ years. Always the best sushi. Mike's creations are outstanding. I've never even ordered off the menu, I just let them surprise me with the next roll.

Tanoshi was a good experience. We were looking for a restaurant to celebrate my birthday early and the reviews about their sushi, nigiri and sashimi was wonderful. We chose the chef's omakase experience and had an amazing time eating some really fresh and delectable sushi rolls after the couple of appetizers. Food was very good and fresh. I wish it was more clear as to how their omakase experience would work. At other places that I've dined at omakase would mean you get smaller, crafted portions and multiple courses. At Tanoshi, we were told to expect rolls by our server but apart from this no other information was shared. We assumed it would be a few of the sushi rolls that the chef was excited for us to try and then move onto the next course for the night or end with dessert. The rolls kept coming and they were full rolls so it was extremely filling. We were also served mochi on the house, which again was wonderful. The surprise was instead of being charged for the omakase experience which is generally a flat fee they billed us for each of the appetizers and the rolls separately similar to what happens when you order a la carte. Below are some recommendations: 1. Please educate the diner how the omakase works at your establishment. 2. Even though all the rolls were excellent, they were mostly the same main ingredients; tuna, yellowtail, avocado and crab stick. Please get some variety. 3. If I'm spending $170+ (for two people including gratuity), and you charge by the roll then I would expect you ask the diner what rolls they would like or maybe what kind of fish, ingredients they would want to eat. I know this defeats the purpose of omakase but charging by the roll also does the same. 4. After the first couple of rolls, we were pretty full but we kept being served more full rolls, maybe you can serve half-rolls. This would help with serving the diners more variety as well as not get them full from overeating. 5. Service was top notch. We appreciate it.

I loved the food and service. Each time i have gone into the Andersonville restaurant I get a slight smell of sewer. It is kind of off putting.

I highly recommend Tanoshii for its excellent selection of delicious appetizers, expertly crafted maki rolls, sushi and sashimi, and udon. It even has wonderful Japanese desserts. It’s also BYO, which makes for a thoroughly enticing meal.

Tanoshii has been our favorite restaurant for years. I’m sad to say that we may need to find another. I can’t justify $30 per roll.
