About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Charming
State of Grace is a coastal, South Texas neighborhood restaurant in the refurbished Lamar-River Oaks Shopping Center. Elegant but casual, its elevated comfort food by executive chef Bobby Matos is executed at the highest level in a welcoming, beautiful space. The jubilant medley of old favorites played with new spice, accent, and freshness lends itself to southern, American, Latin, Gulf Coast, German and Asian influences. Chef-owner Ford Fry’s first venture outside of Atlanta, State of Grace is located in the neighborhood where Ford grew up and nods to his childhood memories fused with Houston’s evolution into a melting pot of cultures and cuisines.

Our waitress was one of the best I’ve had. Her knowledge is excellent and she read me like a book and knew what might please me as far as food or drink. Yes the waitress was amazing. The food is amazing. My guy friend said that the steak was one of the best he’s had And we both really loved the crispy eggplant. I heard him say that the wine was very, very good and my French 75 cocktail was awesome and was recommended by my waitress. She really owned her part. The deviled eggs were interesting. I never had deviled eggs that tasted like that and it was not expected. At first, I wasn’t sure if I like the deviled eggs because I was comparing it to deviled eggs I’m used to. And then when I took the second one, I realized that this was a very new experience for me with new flavors and I appreciated the deviled eggs more after that second egg. By the third egg I had come to terms in my mind of what a devil bag could be, a gourmet experience or something much higher than that. There was a cute older woman valet that made me smile and she was so friendly. The atmosphere was very classy without making me feel uncomfortable. Sometimes beautiful restaurants like this one can make me feel uncomfortable but this one was a beautiful experience Stefano and I will come back. We may next time just have a few drinks and try some favorite foods at the bar when I get off work. Whoever came up with this concept, and the people who manage it created a special experience for the diners.

The environment and staff balanced out the disappointment experienced from the lack in originality and flavors in each dish. Hopefully it can be chalked up to the fact that we visited on a Tuesday. Still not acceptable but that’s my guess. We ordered the deviled eggs that were not balanced in flavor. The texture and level of “doneness” was spot on but the horseradish mixed into the yolk was extremely overpowering. So much that it even took away from the fresh dill garnish. I actually enjoy horseradish in and on many of my dishes but this was a 9/10 overpowering the enjoyment of the dish. The octopus was presented well and had some decent variation in flavors during each bite but it was not something to write home about. The baked oysters appeared appetizing. A good amount of breadcrumbs, garlic and cheese. The oysters did not have any small bits of broken shell mixed in which is always a plus but the flavor was slightly more fishy than great comparable dishes we have ordered from other quality restaurants. The sides ordered were ok. The fried eggplant did have a unique and enjoyable flavor/crunch experience. I would order again. The mashed potato’s lack in texture much like baby food. Flavors are ok but nothing special. The veal schnitzel was a very large portion, and the sauces were very flavorful and enjoyable. Presentation on the other hand could use some extra thought. The Wagyu strip was cooked to perfection and served on a hot plate. This is both good and bad. By the time I got half way through my meal the remaining steak was over cooked from medium rare to medium well. The marbling or lack there of did not appear to be that of other wagyu cuts. It looked like another strip steak. The flavor and bark of the steak was on point with most other quality restaurants. Take my input with a grain of salt that some of the dishes could have used. Everyone’s palate varies. Good luck finding that all around experience. We do have several in Houston.

Baguette, onion soup, red fish, cacio e pepi, pommes agilot were all very good. Salad Maison had too much dressing. Sea bass was not good.

Great ambiance and service. The menu was very unique and gave me NOLA vibes, but it wasn’t very big. Despite that, everything we ordered was unique and tasty.

Nick was fantastic!!! Will definitely request him again. All staff is great. Just wish there were more than three scallops per dish. Felt more like an appetizer than entree
