Chef-owner Jinda is a specialist in Som Tum dishes. She first plied her trade back in 1974 in the local university before moving downtown Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. The Isan-style spicy fish maw with bamboo shoot salad has a nice balance of herbs and its powerful aroma is punctuated by the intensity of the Tiliacora juice. The signature, Som Tum with crispy catfish, dispenses an impressive tang. Som Tum Jinda is also famous over the border in Laos where they have another branch, and new location in downtown Toronto Canada.

Som Tum Jinda offers a vibrant culinary journey with "complex flavors and textures" of Northern Thai cuisine. The "authentic dishes" are a hit, especially the som tum and larb. While the interior is modest, the food and service shine, making it a "must-visit" spot for Thai food enthusiasts.

Best Thai food all three of us have ever had. Highly recommend. No beer downstairs but they serve it upstairs. No problem, just would have been nice to know. Every dish was simply divine.

At 6pm the place was packed - and we'd never really done any sort of 'authentic' thai so our table of four spoke with the waitress and asked for a few recommendations. The pork jowl stole the show but the frogs legs (our first time for everyone at the table) were also quite good. Even the papaya salad which we all sort of scowled at the suggestion but basically wiped the plate clean. 6 dishes across the 4 of us and we would have ordered more if we had room. Next time will have to go lighter on the main courses so we can fit in some dessert. Can't recommend this place highly enough - little hidden one flight of stairs down from the street but worth every step and every dollar. We've already planned our next trip back.

Food was great but asked for mild and the dishes we got were so spicy! And take that from a person who usually eats spicy. That may be an issue for most people who can't very very spicy dishes. Ask for not spicy at all if you do.

Felt like I was in the LES of NYC in my city of Toronto. The place smelled amazing because the food was so flavourful! With that being said, 2 out of 3 dishes were amazing! The server wasn’t helpful when ordering. I mentioned I wanted a side of sticky rice and what she would recommend even after mentioning I wanted a curry. There is one on the menu but because of the peanuts I couldn’t eat it. Her suggestion ended up being a dish severed cold. So disappointing. However, it was still flavourful. I highly recommend the glass noodle dish with beef. Be fully aware, you will walk out smelling like food. A pet peeve of mine.

Had the salted crab papaya salad (ma jaeb) and the pork jowl with rice. Very unique flavours and had freshness to it — loved it!

The Tum Salmon (Pla Ra*) was disappointing and tasted fishy and sour like old salmon was used. The Kai Kra Tiem (garlic chicken with fried egg on rice) was good and standard Thai, and the Khao Noew Mamuag (mango sticky rice) was also good but there was much more rice than there was mango. Overall nothing special and doesn’t make me want to return.

I had heard very good things about Som Tum Jinda, so I was anxious to try it. The food was average. Soup excellent, but the other recommended dishes were disappointing. Firstly, everything was served at once, including soup, which meant that the other dishes go cold before we could eat them. Papaya salad was not at all tasty, and missing some bite, as with glass noodles. Seating is not all that comfortable and music is a bit loud. I’m not sure if the kitchen was having an off night, but it was really nothing special.

Excellent service. Friendly and professional staff. Delicious food. Very affordable. Highly recommend. Inclusion in the Toronto Michelin guide is well deserved.
