San Laurel is one of the flagship restaurants in Chef José Andrés’ collection at Conrad Los Angeles. Here, he effortlessly combines his signature forward-thinking approach to Spanish cuisine with the gorgeous produce found at Southern California’s year-round farmers’ markets. San Laurel is open daily for breakfast and dinner service.

The restaurant’s interior combines organic, earthy tones and natural wood finishes with richer hues to complement what’s on the plate: the flavors of Spain as seen through a California lens.

San Laurel epitomizes innovation and elegance even as it avoids the rough edges of some of the trendy eateries that LA foodies are wont to chase. Its concept will be understood by those who want a genuine fine dining experience and can appreciate its extensions the European Spanish culinary traditions as well those who want to see the California/Los Angeles influences represented there. Our dining experience last Sunday was a success from start to finish. It began with the mezcal-based Cloudy Hill cocktail that did arrive in a cloud of citrus-thyme vapors clearing to reveal a russet liquid chilled by a single diamantine cube and also one of José Andrés' savvy variations on his signature G & Ts. From there it went to a dish of grilled eggplants with mole and one of wild mushrooms in the richest sauce imaginable. For the main plate we shared the basic-sounding "meat and potatoes" that turned out to be anything but basic. It was the most lavish bone-in ribeye I have ever seen, grilled to medium-rare perfection and surrounded by a wreath of herbs. Once presented at table, it was swiftly returned to the kitchen and reappeared carefully carved into bite-size pieces. Over this our server poured a remarkably flavorful jus. It was enough for three. The potatoes were an ethereal purée with a pool of herbal green liquid that left an impression of accompanying greens on the plate. A glass of Tempranillo made it all go down effortlessly. Dessert was a small gem of chocolate crémeux and mint flavors reminiscent of a mousse but creamier. As you would expect, the service at San Laurel is deft and discreet by an intelligent staff. The ambience is relaxed and refined. My review spreads it on pretty thick, but I hope it gives you an idea of the attention to detail that distinguishes everything there. I really do love the place and its special atmosphere. I have dined there four or five times without disappointment whatsoever. I highly recommend it.

Good Spanish cuisine with unusual choices. The selection of plates however is limited, and food portions are small. It’s quite pricey for what you get

Excellent dinner! Dining room seemed a bit loud so we sat outside where there were large heaters and blankets were offered (not needed). The food and service were top notch. Expect to pay over $100 per person but well worth it

Deeply disappointed with my experience at San Laurel. Ordered the Jamon & Manchego sandwich for lunch. When the buser brought out the food, he said “and here is your grilled cheese,” to which I replied “Oh, I ordered the ham and cheese.” Buser assures me, oh yes, there is ham on there, I misspoke. I take a bite, no ham. Peel open one half of the sandwich, no ham in site. Also nowhere in site? My server. I flag down another buser and ask if he can send the server over. Cue 5+ minutes of waiting while I can see the server across the nearly empty restaurant chatting with co-workers. She eventually comes over, apologies, takes the plate and assures me she will correct the mistake. Ten minutes later, she returns with THE ORIGINAL SANDWICH which has a bite taken out of it and has been peeled open and had some slices of ham hastily slapped inside. Mind you, about 15 minutes have passed since the sandwich was initially served to me, so it is also now cold and the rest of my party has finished their entrees. To add insult to injury, the server then comes over with a carafe of tap water to refill my half empty glass. I held my hand over the glass and reminded her that we had ordered sparkling water for the table. Upon me removing my hand, she filled the glass anyways and then asked me if I wanted to buy another bottle of sparkling. The whole service experience was truly uncomfortable, embarrassing and over priced. For a restaurant with a big name celebrity chef attached, they should be deeply ashamed of the level of service they are providing.

Went for NYE. The food was amazing. But the server was trying to make us move so fast that our entire tasting menu was served in under 45 minutes, and we had the table for 2 hours. He didn’t even look that busy, but he only took basic care of us, nothing above the minimum, and we felt rushed. On previous visits the service was amazing, so maybe a fluke that night. But considering our bill was $1200 we were expecting a different level of attention and timing.

Fantastic experience overall. No minuses except price maybe. The restaurant is on the 10th floor of the Conrad hotel building. Walk across street from Disney Hall where we were before the dinner. Recommend multiple shared plates and a couple of the main courses. Drinks were excellent. Service was top notch. Highly recommend as a special occasion place to go to.
