Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Oyamel offers a vibrant Mexican dining experience with "fantastic food" and a lively atmosphere. The "guacamole is incredible" and the Oyamel Margarita is a must-try. While the service can be hit or miss, attentive staff often elevate the experience. The noise level is high, but the authentic flavors keep patrons returning.

We had change of plans and arrived 45 minutes ahead of out reservation but were happily seated! Our server was super attentive and the food was delicious, just the right amount too. The only unpleasant experience was the music - entirely too loud but was turned down at my request.

Food & service great; too noisy at lunch to permit good conversation.

Service was actually generally good but server was rude and really tried to push us out an hour into our reservation. Hostess walked up to our table and demanded we give her the drink menu. Literally just walked up to the table and sajd “give me the drink menu.”

I distinctly asked for a table and not a booth. We ended up in a booth, which have NO back support. On the other hand, our server was gracious and attentive. He made the difference. The food was very good. I’d never had cricket tacos. They were a little over spiced but tasty. The house Margarita had a minimal amount of tequila. Not a good sign for their signature drink! Finally, the guacamole had no seasoning to speak of and the house chips must have 200% of your daily salt intake. I hope it’s not intentional to get you to drink more.

Oyamel is my favorite Jose Andres restaurant. The small plates and creative drinks make it difficult to categorize it as a "Mexican restaurant". The food is authentically Mexican, but not what most Americans are used to. I appreciate the wide variety of vegetarian dishes, including their refried black beans. The servers are generally wonderful. If you think about going, book well ahead. The restaurant is large and always full.

Guacamole is above average and my tacos were as well. But the chips are too salty, the chicken soup is too creamy and lacks depth of flavor. Michelada was good but the ice in it interfered.
