Oma's Hideaway is a vibrant, maximalist restaurant inspired by the life and spirit of Chef Thomas Pisha Duffly's grandmother, Kiong Tien “Tina” Vandenberg. Her ability to adapt, to make the most out of limited resources, and to stay creative while projecting warmth and brightness is the guiding force behind Oma’s Hideaway.

Born during the pandemic as a pop-up in the Gado Gado parking lot, Oma’s became a permanent beacon of iridescent light in Portland’s Richmond neighborhood in 2021. The menu draws from Tina’s life story, taking influence from the craveable, soul-satisfying hawker food of Singapore and Malaysia and “turning up the volume” with exaggerated yet balanced flavors in Chef Tom’s signature style. Oma’s serves dinner accompanied by a seasonal list of hand-crafted cocktails and zero-proof drinks.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Thomas Pisha-Duffly

From the OpenTable editors: A disco-style dining room, whimsical sea-inspired wallpaper, and vintage 1970s lamps—Oma’s Hideaway is a maximalist escape from the acclaimed Gado Gado team. The standout Southeast Asian menu is a love letter to James Beard Award-nominated chef Thomas Pisha-Duffly’s grandmother and the region’s hawker fare. Start with fruity house jello shots topped with mango boba before digging into standouts like wonton mee (yellow noodles with pork belly) and salted egg yolk curry fries.

Oma's Hideaway is a charming place, and the staff is fantastic and attentive. It strides the line between relaxed dining and funky dive with their disco lighting. That is a big plus, in my opinion, because good food and stuffy decor need not be synonymous. On to the dishes, which were delicious overall with modest criticism. It's dumpling week in Portland, and they had one featured on the menu: Buffalo Shrimp Dumplings, crispy shrimp & pork siu mai, buffalo chili crisp, miso blue cheese, pickled celery & radish herb salad. I added their description, because it's a nicely inventive combination that may not be on the the web site when you read this. They were absolutely yummy, though the wrapper does get a little lost in the mix. I'd say they had more the mouthfeel of one of the best meatballs I've had. I'd get them again. Speaking of repeats, get the roti. Definitely get the roti. I have no words, and the dipping curry sauce makes them that much better. So very very good. From there, my wife got the Wonton Mee, a great combo of flavors, though probably more my style with all the pickled veggies in it. The dish was very rich and some alcohol is recommended to accompany it. I got the game hen, which had a wonderful flavor. The slaw and sauce that came with it was great, though I ordered an additional side of slaw because I absolutely needed more fresh veggies to balance the richness of the hen. My only disappointment was the dryness of the breast meat. The server described the cooking method, smoke then fry, as resulting in juicy meat. They preemptively gave use some corn fritters, that were delicious, perhaps because they may have heard me mention the meat dryness out loud. Very kind, regardless of the reason. They suggested coconut rice to go with the game hen, and I would as well, a fantastic accompaniment. I got the Good Luck Babe, a Negroni-like cocktail with a coconut twist, very tasty. My wife's Lambrusco unfortunately was flat, but still drinkable.

We love Oma’s! Always great food and people. And be sure to order a Mai Tai (“That’s Mai Type”) slushy (or two).

Some wonderful flavors and interesting and creative dishes. Overall a really satisfying meal. Service was very irritating and poorly trained. Expect rote and low energy regurgitation of scripted lines and food descriptions. Don't interrupt the script with a question or expect authentic interaction or you'll get a world class eye roll from your server. Good luck getting their attention for a drink refill, or additional bowl of rice. Two different servers brought us our check, the second after we had already paid and that was the most attention we got all night.

This is my favorite place in all of Portland. IT's just absolutely yummy. The vibe is Portland-clean. lol the roti with the squash is amazing; the mixed drinks are yummy. The waitstaff seem like they actually enjoy working there. Even though I think the portions are a little small, 10 outta 10.
