Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Joel Stocks

From the OpenTable editors: One of the New York Times's 50 favorite restaurants of 2024, L'Orange charms with its refined, Pacific Northwest-influenced Mediterranean small plates and superbly curated wine in a homey, cozy atmosphere. The combo quickly captivated local critics and diners, who show up in droves for dishes like roasted garlic soup with grapes or poached and grilled cauliflower with curried granola. It all obviously pairs beautifully with owner Jeff Vejr's large, varied selection.

Philosophy

At L'Orange we hope to transport you back to a time when full service dining was the norm. We hope that you feel the warmth of our space, the ease of our hospitality, and the delicious layers of flavors that our food and wine provide.

Love the way this spot is somewhat a hidden jewel. We sat at the bar and the fun and knowledgeable service was tops. That chicken liver mousse pate was like butter;smooth and perfectly seasoned. I want more! Next we had the sturgeon, cauliflower and gnocchi. All was superb. I want to go back next week. Not a thing was less than 5 stars.

Each dish was thoughftul, unique and delicious. I'm a big lover of Duck Confit and it was the best I have had in PNW. The wine was also great.

L'Orange is a really hip place, and I use that term intentionally. It is true to Portland's culture on the second floor of a converted home across from a Dive bar and a plant-based ice cream establishment. It is small and reservations are a must. The bar seemed lively and a bit louder. We dined in the "purple room." The menu has something for everyone but isn't expansive. Much of it is made to share. Highly recommend the sturgeon, and I did splurge on the caviar accompaniment. The fish was well prepared and seasoned. Other standouts were the green salad which was beautiful and expertly dressed. The gnocchi was also spectacular and something I haven't really had not in an Italian context. Finally, as cauliflower is still having its renaissance, we did get a plate of this creative spin. For dessert, we had the L'Orange cake. It looks like a slice of steak when plated. The cake was not overly sweet. It was on the dense side but not in a bad way. It was probably the least appreciated dish we had, and yet I would get it again (after trying the other desserts!). Lastly for the price, our meal for two cost less than the bottle of wine we brought with us. The tables are small and seating is cozy, so only take people you actually like. We sat next to another married couple on a date night and had a great time conversing and sharing our wine. This is a place you could come back to monthly and not get bored.

Fantastic restaurant! Mellow ambience on the second floor of a >100 yo house. Cozy. Food was amazing. Duck confit was a very unusual presentation and utterly delicious. Clams and mussels Devine. Prices were very reasonable. Waitstaff was fun and engaged. Definitely going back!

L’Orange is one of my favorite Portland restaurants. The service is always on point, the food never disappoints, and they have a great wine list. Try it; it will become one of your favorites, too.
