Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

Loved it!! Great food, service and really enjoyed the lively atmosphere. The basque cheesecake was unbelievable. And you have to get the baguette.

Noisy restaurant and only half full on a Thursday evening at 7. The food was good, 'though not outstanding. The menu was quite limited. Presentation was definitely poor an unimaginative.

We went for our anniversary and the service was spectacular! Our waiter went above and beyond and had a very charismatic personality. We went on a Sunday night and it was not as busy so it felt very intimate and we were able to enjoy the ambience a little more. Their food is really good and their deserts left me wanting seconds.

Service was chaotic…everything from hostesses, bartenders, and waitstaff seemed inexperienced and lacked care and interest. Food was okay to good. Not worth going back

We had a wonderful dinner at Le Coq. The interior is beautiful. The service was outstanding, and the food was delicious. We loved the baguette - they make them just the way I like best, crunchy on the outside and a bit chewy inside, and the butter was sooo good. I want to buy some of that butter. Steak frites was excellent as was the lamb, and a large portion. Also loved the tuna tartare, interesting combination - I’d never had it served with a cream sauce. Definitely also recommend the Pomme Darphin - crispy on the outside, melt in your mouth shredded potatoes on the inside. We were celebrating 3 birthdays, and the staff took excellent care of us. We will definitely look forward to going back.

This is our fourth visit to Le Coq and once again we are very pleased with the service and quality. Sergio, our waiter was very knowledgeable and attentive. The owner Chris Puffer was gracious and entertaining. We will certainly return again.
