The food was an excellent! Serving sizes were perfect we couldn’t even get to desert! I recommend the pretzel appetizers as well, got them every night! The bartender knows their drinks as well as the wait staff, who by the way are very pleasant and knowledgeable! I highly recommend the breakfast too! We did all three meals and not once were we disappointed. Service was fast as well.

Hawthorne Hotel in and of itself has historic value. For us it is special for this is where we were married 26 yrs ago. The staff are friendly efficient and seem highly trained. The manager was kind and thoughtful -sending over a glass of champagne. However the dining rm had the one waiter - to be host bartender and server. No fault of theirs, but service was painfully slow. Adding to the scene and perhaps as a defense there was a large event simultaneously scheduled - lines of people would walk through the dining room to get to a function room. The menu is limited, but has variety. Pricing is odd but with good portions, ie meatloaf is $32. Food quality is poor, although served professionally. Meatloaf arrived lukewarm, the meat was too dry & sugary sweet with oddly flavored mashed potatoes and rubbery broccolini. The whipped ricotta app would have been good but the toppings didn’t work together and overpowered the ricotta/honey. Dessert selection was the final menu disappointment. We always appreciate the vibe of dining with the live music. The guest musician had guitar skills and guest-friendly, but became distracted by the very busy hotel/dining …and was prone to monologuing. Every time someone entered, he stopped to make the same joke. It makes me sad to say our anticipated dinner was an unsatisfactory experience. May HH take this in the spirit it is offered and is open to identifying and Implementing improvements.

I like the Hawthorne and will return. This was their tavern. My chowder and burger were great. However, my onion rings were burnt to a crisp. They shouldn’t have been served at all, and there’s an up charge for them. My partner’s sweet potato fries were so much better.

The acoustic guitarist was wonderful and created a relaxing atmosphere. We were created soon after arrival with the opportunity to order a drink. I prefer beer to be ice cold, so it was less enjoyable than typical. We ordered after drinks arrived and our meals were delivered fairly quickly but it was then that we realized no one asked about allergies and in fairness we didn’t volunteer the information, bottom line my wife’s tree nut allergy required her meal be sent back and by the time it was returned, I was half done. The food was fine. I ordered the chowder which needed a little more seafood and seasoning and my wife very much enjoyed her meal. I think the restaurant needed more staff because our server doubled as a bartender which didn’t allow for drink follow up or timely conclusion of the evening.

The Tavern is one of my favorite places to go in Salem. The service today was less than satisfactory. Not sure if they were overwhelmed or just didn’t want to be a server today. Too bad too, we always leave a nice tip. Oh well maybe next time will be better. The worst part was today’s my birthday. So that kind of sucks

Cozy dining room with excellent food in the historic Hawthorne Hotel? It’s everything! From the cocktails to desert, we enjoyed our evening sitting in front of the large fireplace.
