Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Michael Stoltzfus and Kristen Essig

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Michael Stoltzfus showcases local ingredients at his swanky Southern bistro, nominated for numerous James Beard Awards since opening in 2008. In a two-story residence in the Garden District that dates back to the 1880s, the elegant dining rooms are lined with brick and chandeliers. Gulf seafood stars at the raw bar, from local oysters to crabmeat and crackers, and fans love the fried chicken brunches and “no menu” five-course dinners.

Food was delicious, service was good. We showed up early to have a few drinks at the bar before our reservation. The host said they didn’t have any room at the bar nor could they seat us early because they were booked up. As I looked around, the bar was open except for 2 or three couples and the 1st floor dining room was empty except one table. So I asked if we could sit at the bar and have drinks until their next reservation was due and I was told no. So we left and got drinks somewhere else only to return for our reservation and find the dining room still empty as well as the bar. We were seated at a second floor table but again the room was empty except maybe 5 tables counting us. It was odd but seemed like they used the “we are booked” method to keep people coming although they weren’t really full?

The rabbit which we have had on multiple occasions had many chards of bone.

This is a little gem. While not impressed by the atmosphere when when we walked in, I quickly warmed to it because the wait staff were friendly and attentive without being overly present and the noise level was tolerable and the restaurant has a surprisingly intimate feel despite the fact that we were seated next to the bar, which was not loud. Everyone was happy with their entree, which include the braised rabbit, beef short rib, and a very lightly battered flounder filet that was not at all overly breaded or overcooked. Dessert was fabulous as well, and we found a nice bottle of Montalcino wine for $65.

Amazing meal from beginning to end. Fabulous mixed drinks (the Rye cocktail was the best), the seafood tower was out of this world, and our party of 6 got almost every entree and loved them all, with the flounder and steak frites being our two favorites.

We had high hopes for Coquette after an incredible experience at Wild South, but the service ruined it. Our server was sullen, indifferent, and disengaged from the start. Despite noting my birthday on the reservation, no one acknowledged it—not expecting a fuss, but a simple “happy birthday” would have been nice. Oysters were great, but the beef jam appetizer was forgettable. I asked the server for a recommendation and chose the shrimp chitarra. No menu explanations, just a lazy “any questions?” approach. The pasta was undercooked and bland, overwhelmed by spice, and the shrimp and crab were tough. I barely touched it, but the server never checked in. He silently cleared the plates and dropped the dessert menu without a word. We shared the fried donut dessert—dry and flavorless. The only small courtesy was comping my entrée, but it didn’t make up for the poor service. No thank you, no farewell—just indifference. Easily one of my worst dining experiences, especially shocking given how amazing Wild South was.

Wonderful flavor, but their definition of large plate is deceptive.

The food was fabulous and the service was speedy. They had a nice variety of NA cocktails which was fantastic, since I do not drink alcohol much. The sizes were just perfect, I did not feel stuffed when we left. I highly recommend this restaurant.
