   Pay no attention to the negative reviews about the quality of the food, and not very much to the quality of the service Our most recent experience was excellent, and we had no problems with service That said, we didn't make any special requests, and tried not to be put off by the notice on Open Table about only holding a reservation for 10 minutes (they've always been kinda cranky about that). Go with the flow and it'll be great

   We wanted to celebrate a graduation, and chose Comal due to its ability to seat larger groups. They had great reviews on Google but only okay reviews on Yelp, so I decided to go through with it anyways. Upon arrival, they seated us promptly. There were only 6 of us and there were lots of other larger gatherings there as well. They were prompt with their service. We ordered: chips and salsa, the shareable spit roasted whole chicken, fish tacos, chicken tinga tacos, and mixiote de pollo. From the pictures and the price, I was expecting good food. We were all disappointed with the bland food that was served. The chicken was cooked well, but the potatoes weren’t even seasoned. There was so little flavor in the fish tacos, that the only thing you could taste was the was the disappointingly dry mouth feel of the cod with an assortment of miscellaneous flavorless toppings. The chicken tynga was the only decent taco but still underwhelming. Considering the price of roughly 8 dollars a taco, I felt a bit ashamed for paying such a price for something so disappointing. The only highlight of the night was that the house chips were tasty and refillable. I will not be returning to Comal in the future and I cannot with good conscience suggest this location to anyone. It was a disappointing finale to what was supposed to be a day of celebration.

   If was my third time dining at Comal and it won’t be the last. We like the delicious food, outstanding service and wonderful atmosphere. Looking forward to eventually trying everything on the menu! I highly recommend Comal.

   Service attentive; nice looking, good drinks, good vibe but food was not notable, salads overdressed; quesadilla not interesting. Not a lot distinctive or wish nuance

   Comal has long been a standby for us when in Berkeley with its fabulous atmosphere, great tequila cocktails, and high quality, if sometimes underseasoned, Mexican food. Last night was a total miss, mostly due to shoddy, dont-give-a-damn service but also due to deeply mediocre tacos (al pastor and cod). The guac was an also a bit thinner than usual and the chips greasier but with less salt. I hate to blame the mandatory 20% service fee in lieu of a merit based tip, but it was very clear that the young lady serving us didn’t feel obligated to time food/drinks or check in often enough despite the restaurant having emptied out given how late it was. We love the place enough to give it another go and hope this was just a one-off, but if the quality and service continue to decline, we’ll have to bid this gorgeous restaurant adieu.
