   The offerings during happy hour are nice. Was surprised to see that they had happy hour offering on Saturday evening. We stumbled in a little early and made a meal of it, eggplant parm, calamari, salad, bread, wine. everything was delicious. Our server, Franklin was a hoot. so pleasant and fun.

   1) Cioppino was served loaded with salmon & unknown white fish….menu did not list fish as an ingredient…only shellfish. 2) Tortellini was overcooked…mushy and tasteless….wasn’t eaten. 3) Filet was overcooked tenderized…almost mushy. The 4 diners were served at three different times over a 10 minute period. The 2 diners who ordered cioppino were served at 2 different times…5 minutes apart. The waiter never checked back to ask how things were. When flagged down he feigned ignorance about the fish laden cioppino and said he would tell the chef. Never returned and we had to flag the manager. At conclusion of this experience….without our asking….1 cioppino was credited….the uneaten tortellini was ignored. NO APOLOGY OFFERED….it was like shame on us (the restaurant) for being caught. Stay away from this place

   Our waiter, Mario, was his usual pleasant self with helpful suggestions and expedient service. The place has a wonderful neighborhood feel to it. Decent wine selections by the glass or the bottle. We weren’t particularly hungry and split the pepperoni pizza. It was tasty but not as crispy as we like. Mario said he’d try to correct that on our next visit. The affogato was really delicious!

   Sat down at 7:45, was served our appetizer almost 40 minutes later. The calamari was very good. We then got our meals around 9:15. Chicken parmigiana was very good. The pasta it came with was a bowtie Alfredo? Kind of a weird combo. My girlfriend ordered the rigatoni mama rosa, was not good. The noodles were basically raw. Au dente is good, having a crunch is raw. Not to mention a table next to us who ordered 30 min after us received their meal before us and it was still sub par. Thankfully Franklin our waiter was understanding and took care of it.

   The restaurant was mobbed the night we were there and there was only one server, hardly enough to handle the number of patrons. She was doing a remarkable job considering the circumstances, but service suffered regardless. We understood and will be back. This was the night the restaurants were giving 20% of proceeds to fire victims, so glad to see such a good turnout!

   So I only travel to Dana Point periodically BUT I will always make an effort to go to Casanova’s. Restaurants like Casanova’s are unique, particularly in the ‘dining out’ experiences available these days. It can be intimate because it’s a small restaurant. BUT it’s obvious that a lot of people come to Casanova’s to ‘celebrate’ and so the noise level can be an issue. I was there on a Friday and the place was buzzing. A woman with 3 small children sat across from me and she endeavoured to keep the children seated and reasonably quiet. I applaud her efforts as children need to experience another level of ‘eating out’ besides MacDonald’s. Anyway, having said that I was not really disturbed by any of the other conversations in the room. And the server and the food didn’t disappoint, including at the bar! I hope to get back to Casanova’s again this year, if not? Arrivederci
