Caffé Greco, Melbourne’s iconic dining institution and meeting place, is reopening after three decades in Oakleigh. Its origins trace back to the inspiring story of Nick Madalena, a Greek man who journeyed to Rome in 1760, founding the original Caffè Greco, which has since become a revered national institution in Italy, celebrated for over 260 years. This tale of migration and the pursuit of a better life is what motivated Nick Zampelis to establish a Melbourne branch of Caffé Greco, continuing a legacy of cultural exchange and community that spans centuries.

As Melbourne’s own Caffé Greco reopens, it draws from this rich heritage of bringing together diverse minds, continuing the tradition of being a cultural meeting point where patrons can not only enjoy fine coffee but also engage in the kind of conversation and creativity that defined its Roman predecessor.

$45 for porterhouse steak with her salad which consisted of 4 leaves of what looked like clover. Friend had moussaka which was swimming in béchamel sauce. Granted they did agree the moussaka wasn’t right and didn’t charge her and she was able to order another meal, lamb shoulder which was full of fat. Was only asked once if we wanted a drink and that’s when we ordered. Won’t be back. Plenty of other amazing Greek Restaurants in the mall that are a lot more reasonably priced and much better quality food.

Cafe Greco @ Oakleigh is a breath of fresh air in the Platia of Oakleigh aka Little Athens. Today I had a lovely lunch at Cafe Greco and it reminded me back in the old days of Chapel Street Cafe Greco, beautiful staff, lovely food and lovely settings.. Wonderful !!

Was really looking forward to coming here but left disappointed. Our order came out incorrect, spaghetti instead of rigatoni as they ran out. This should have been advised before we received our meals so we had a chance to change the order. Place is nice, service was good but you have to ask to be attended to. It has potential to be a great place.

Main dishes were under cooked. I had advised it was for a birthday and was given a seat outside on the very edge. Not very appealing for a special event. For the price we paid I expected better from a very experienced and successful establishment.

It was very hot! We sat on the mezzanine in a booth and it was so hot they didn’t have the air con on and everyone was sweltering, using their napkins as fans. I had the lobster spaghetti which was pretty good. Didn’t have the parsley crumb like the menu said which would have made the dish so I was a bit disappointed for a $55 dish. But overall pretty good.

We were there for hours sitting in a booth reminiscing like the old days. Food was great, love the decor and service was pretty good too. Can’t complain, glad to have a restaurant like this in oakleigh.
