Beauty & Essex has an innovative design that starts in the restaurant’s entrance, a well-curated modern-day pawn shop replete with a saxophone, boom­box, quirky artifacts, vintage treasures, and an eclectic array of “one-off” pieces of jewelry. Continuing past the pawnshop, guests encounter a grand, circular staircase wrapped around a two-story custom chandelier, but only the adventurous will discover all that Beauty & Essex has to offer. With four distinct dining rooms (one private), two bars, a lounge, and a women’s bathroom complete with a salon including a luxurious sofa, and antique perfume bottles. The cuisine, much like the design, is intended to set a new course. Chef Chris Santos was one of the pioneers of the small, share plate dining trend that has swept the nation, and with the Beauty & Essex menu, he once again has created waves on the food scene.

    My friend and I tried the tasting menu for dinner. Every single thing we ordered was amazing! The service was impeccable and the ambiance was a super cool, trendy vibe. Can’t wait to return and eat here again!

    Great place!! I would love to recommend this place! The food was so great, and I recommend the appetizers and raw bar, they were amazing. Great restaurant, and it’s like walking into a secret place!

    This restaurant was not to my liking, mostly because of the atmosphere, which I acknowledge is a purely personal thing. You enter it through a pawn shop front, which was kind of cool. Inside, it’s really dark with extravagant art nouveau decor and really loud background music. The place was packed, so I admit it’s popular, but mostly a much younger crowd. The service was first rate. The “Little French Dips” we ordered arrived almost immediately. They were tasty enough, but cold on the inside, that tells me premade, refrigerated, then reheated for serving. The kale apple salad was delicious. We didn’t care for the mushroom ravioli (well prepared, just not my liking). I am a huge fan of roasted bone marrow, unfortunately this one didn’t make it for me, especially the shallot marmalade it was served with which I found excessively sweet. Every dish was well prepared, but except for the salad, the flavors didn’t work for us. This place is great for some people, but not for me. I won’t be back. I think there are far better and less extravagant restaurants to be enjoyed in New York City.
