Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Ralph Pausina

From the OpenTable editors: Antoine’s is the county’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and a special-occasion destination for its opulent setting and elegant, French-Creole fare. Sit in one of 14 gilded dining rooms to feast on favorites like oyster Rockefeller and soufflé potatoes, both original to the restaurant. Cap the meal with a classic baked Alaska or the house chicory coffee, laced with cognac and triple sec and flamed tableside—it’s New Orleans, after all.

We found it to be somewhat meh. Understood why it’s so popular but our experience didn’t match the hype. Ambiance: Our reservation was 8:15 and while to was densely populated there was no wait to get in. This place is misleadingly large with several dining rooms that are wide open. Noise: noise level was overwhelming. We could only hear about half of what our soft spoken waiter was saying. This is not an intimate dining experience. Service: the service was not spectacular. It took several minutes to be acknowledged and our glasses of water and tea ran dry repeatedly, despite the large number of waitstaff present. Food: our food which included apps and full entrees was good but not great. Our entrees were brought out slightly above room temp after waiter acknowledged it was taking a long time. When we mentioned it to him, we assured him it tasted okay but that it was all basically cold. He apologized and offered to send a manager to see if we could get credit to our bill. I found that a wee bit offensive. As for food.

It was not a great experience. My husband loves NOLA and loves the old feel restaurants. Overall, very underwhelming beginning to end. Our server was very inattentive for this type of dining. -Bar drinks came after the appetizer came to the table. -Oyster sampler had lots of shell pieces. -French Onion soup tasted like roast beef broth from the crockpot, needed salt and the onions needed to have cooked for a lot longer. We waited about 5 min for our server to return to check on us. With a back and front server, very shocking. -The Artichoke soup was fantastic (highlight) -I ordered the Fruits De Mar; the shrimp (3) were over cooked and fishy, scallops (4) were overcooked/bouncy and my first bite of crab cake was all shells - $59 dinner, I did return, server offered something else, but I was over it. -husbands lamb was just ok -our server did offer us dessert, I just wanted to go, my husband did have the chocolate cake - said it was fine. -overall not a great experience and don't want to go again. The funny thing was that we had gone to Brennan's in the am and the server told us that we should have going to Antoine's first so we could compare. No comparison - service food drinks! Husband wants to go back - not me!

I was so so excited to eat here, I wanted this reservation for Valentine’s Day and couldn’t get it, so when I got it for my mothers birthday I was overjoyed. To start the meal we got seated promptly which was nice. We were then escorted to a table that happen to be near a large party that became overwhelmingly intoxicated as the meal went on. We ordered the charbroiled oysters, which only came by the 1/2 dozen may I add, and salad to start. The salad was good and the oysters were underwhelming. They were barely warm, tiny, and just not on the level. My entre was the almandine which was cooked perfectly golden with a nice onion rice, one huge problem that ruined the birthday night ending in the hospital, I swallowed chewed a bite of my fish thoroughly and still manage to end up with a pin bone lodged in the side of my throat that caused immense pain ending the night abruptly. I ran to the bathroom projectile spewing ruining not only my night, but other diner experiences. Worst of all I ruined my mother’s birthday. I was so excited to eat here and I just wish it would’ve turned out better for such a legendary establishment. I expected much better.
