Chocolate Afternoon Tea served with a hot beverage of your choice in The Garden Room Our enchanting afternoon tea is inspired by York’s well-renowned history with chocolate. York once known as ‘The Chocolate City’ dating back almost 300 years, at its peak, over 14,000 people were employed in the city’s famous chocolate factories - including Rowntree’s site at Haxby Road, which opened in 1890, and was so big it had its own fire brigade, and Terry’s Chocolate Works factory near York Racecourse, which opened in 1926. Inspired by history, our Executive Chef has created and developed a truly magical indulgence of mouth-watering flavours using some well-known classic inspiration from the nation’s favourite chocolates.

We went for afternoon tea at the Milner for my husband’s birthday. It was ok - but is that really what you should expect from a 4 star hotel? It was described (and the reason I booked it) as a chocolate-themed afternoon tea. The only chocolate in evidence on the day that we went was an over-baked chocolate brownie. When I queried this, I was told that they change the cakes every 2 weeks!!! The sandwiches were very fresh but a little bland. The quiche was disappointing - the onion was swimming in brown liquid which meant that the quiche disintegrated and the vinegary taste over-whelmed the cheese. My husband described the scone as a brick. It was huge, but again over-baked. It crumbled completely when cut and then trying to put jam and cream on it. It was very tasty, fruity and lightly spiced though. The cakes are ok - the strawberry cheesecake is lovely but again disintegrates when you try to pick it up. Avoid the lemon (?) fondant fancy as it is sickeningly sweet with synthetic tasting cream. The absolute worst aspect however was the service. No-one to greet us on arrival. We weren’t offered any additional tea until we were standing up to put our coats on (there was no-one around to ask). During the time we were there, other people were standing at the counter and walking and then when a member of staff did appear everyone was rushing to the bar to place orders. I heard a number of people complain. There was one poor guy working on his own most of the time and I did feel sorry for him. Another lady came to help but stood staring into space instead of walking round asking guests if everything was ok or if they needed more drinks. A 12.5% service charge was added to the bill but as I wasn’t given a copy until after I had paid I didn’t realise this. I must admit that if I had known I would have asked for it to be removed - and I have never done that anywhere. So overall, the afternoon tea is ok, but there are far better experiences at other hotels in York.

The food was really great, in particular the scones. The staff were a bit hit and miss (at points there were no staff at all in the place) and seemed confused over vegan vs vegetarian options although helpful when they were there. The violinist would have been a nice touch if he hadn’t been out of tune.

Service was generally slow and inattentive. Pots of tea often arrived a long time after we had asked for them and usually arrived lukewarm. We did not get the table we had reserved. I phoned 2 days before we had our visit and Laura at the hotel confirmed that we had a table for 6 in the window. We did not get this and the waiter on the day was completely unapologetic, clearly feeling it was his colleague's fault and we would just have to go with what was available. The low sofa and coffee table seating that we got instead (including 2 stools) was uncomfortable. I had also asked for the bill to brought to me discreetly as this was a present for the other 5 guests. When it was brought over to me the waiter announced the full amount to pay in front of everyone (£276.41 for 6 people including service charge). Very poor. Quite simply this is a wonderful setting for an afternoon tea with the food being of a high standard. However when you are paying these kinds of prices (£39.95 per head to include prosecco) plus a 12.5% service charge I would expect the service and overall experience to be 5 star. It was 2 star at best and this really lets it down. I suspect there are better afternoon tea experiences to be had in York which represent better value for money.

Lovely afternoon tea in the Garden Room. The sandwiches were nice and the scones were great, they were warmed and served with jam and clotted cream. We had the festive afternoon tea which meant the cakes were festive themed, I would prefer them be the usual cakes. I wasn’t a fan of the Christmas pudding or mince pie flavour. Overall, it was great. I would go back for regular afternoon tea but not the festive one due to the cakes. Service was amazing
