The Grain House Restaurant is located on the picturesque 10-acre estate of the Olde Mill Inn in Basking Ridge, NJ. The Grain House structure was originally built as a barn in the 1760’s and was used to store grain for American Revolutionary soldiers. The barn was later moved to its current location and opened as a restaurant in the 1930’s. Today, the Grain House is a renowned restaurant in North/Central New Jersey, with a comfortable, casual ambiance. The restaurant serves innovative, traditional and contemporary interpretations of American cuisine with some added international accents, prepared under the direction of Executive Chef John Benjamin. Delicious homemade desserts complete the menus, which are revised several times a year.     This is an upscaled price restaurant with excellent food. Opportunities for aligning ambiance and service with the quality of food and prices that were noted: 1/ a cocktail in an upscale restaurant should not have a cheap maraschino cherry. Small detail and big impact. 2/ Overall the decor is pleasant but the bare wood table feels worn and dated. 3/ Pacing the meal or asking diners how they wish to pace the meal would better align with an upscale establishment, i.e. do not serve appetizer while diners are still drinking cocktail, ask for transition to wine selection before serving entree, wait for wine to be consumed prior to offering dessert (or at least check in if customers are ready for dessert menu). 4/ While I prefer fewer food choices, the dessert menu has the opportunity to have better selection.
