U Street Corridor Restaurants

Eclectic music, historic theaters and diverse food define Washington, D.C.’s historic U Street Corridor. In the first half of the 20th century, the area blossomed as an African-American community. Lillian Evans Tibbs, the first renowned African-American opera performer, hailed from a house on 1910 Vermont Avenue. Visitors can take in live jazz, blues, funk and other music in dining rooms and rooftop bars. Southern-style offerings include fried chicken; bourbon sauces over salmon, chicken and ribs; and collard greens. To testify to its culinary diversity, the corridor produces everything from chili-covered hot dogs to vegetarian and vegan dishes.
