The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London.Today, Mike Pope and his team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year. Overlooking the historic Ludford bridge, just a few minutes walk from the town centre of Ludlow, the Charlton Arms is the epitome of a charming Pub.     From the genuinely friendly welcome to the pleasure of enjoying excellent local produce in lovely intimate surroundings, we thoroughly enjoyed our whole experience. We have been equally delighted on our previous visits and it is reassuring to have experienced the same again. This, to us, is a mark of the quality of staff that The Riverside retains. A lovely day and a very big thank you to everybody at The Riverside who ensured that this birthday visit was a great success.

    Food was exceptional, my potatoes were cold and the dish was freshly made again for me, disappointed I couldn’t eat at the same time as my husband but the food made up for this when mine arrived! Highly recommend.

    We were dealt with in a very friendly manner. The menu was small which made us feel confident the food would be of good quality. Our expectations were well met as the food, particularly the duck main, was outstanding. We couldn’t fault the main course at all, it was delicious and beautifully presented.
