Originally from Mexico City, Chef Fernando Olea, formerly Chef of Epazote, has been enthralling diners in Santa Fe since 1991. Chef Olea creates sophisticated flavors using Old Mexico’s indigenous and culinary traditions alongside ingredients from around the world. His menu is deliberately small, featuring fresh and locally sourced produce and meats when possible.Nothing evokes the mystery of Mexican cuisine more than mole, a sauce of complex flavors that usually includes toasted and ground spices, seeds, nuts, chocolate and chile. Many mole recipes contain more than thirty ingredients and some recipes have five varieties of chile alone. Chef Olea is delighted to share his moles that include his "New Mexican Mole" that he created to commemorate Santa Fe’s 400 year anniversary in 2009. The large mural in the main dining room, was painted and presented to Chef Olea by Federico Leon De La Vega, a well- known artist from Mexico City.

I had a transcendental experience at Izanami this evening, and it was my first time (hopefully not the last!) -like stumbling into the bathhouse from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited away, except I remained human by the end of dinner, just barely. I joke, but the staff were remarkably friendly and attentive to this solo traveler with a shabby haircut, scruffy beard and scuffed shoes. I had to let the barkeep and manager, and chefs know that they were participating in something divine- they smiled in thanks - they already know! What a joy to be in a place filled with people ignited with their purpose! To join in their rhythm of lovingly crafted sashimi, rich Miyazaki Wagyu which I cooked myself on a blisteringly hot stone, and THE best karaage (fried chicken) I’ve ever had in my life- this was an absolute treasure and I will remember this when I die. (Hopefully as an old man!) Find a video of my experience on the Adventure Sena YouTube channel in a week or so from this review- and remember, life is an adventure! Thank you to Izanami for an inspiring addition to my quest. Gochisousamadeshita!

Needed to take a friend for a pre-concert birthday dinner-- and then found out it was Restaurant Week -- NOT my favorite time to go out to eat! Then found out from our extremely nice and professional server (sorry I can't remember her name) that we could also order from the regular menu. Our bill ended up near the same -- but we had 2 wonderful courses of our choice rather than 3 courses from a limited menu. I think the cholula has improved; the note I made the last time I went was that "it sounded better than it was." I had a couple of bites of my friend's order, and it tasted wonderful. I had the duck breast, which was cooked to scientific perfection -- fully cooked but not a minute more for a wonderful texture. Who knew the same combination in a dessert -- poblano mole ice cream, beet garnish and sweet potato chips --could taste so good and not weird? The ambiance, the food and the service -- worth every penny and calorie. In a different class than all the other "destination restaurants" I've experienced in Santa Fe.
