Popoca is a Salvadoran-inspired restaurant in the heart of Oakland. Popoca means “to emit smoke” in Nawat, the language of native people of El Salvador who stoked wood fires to prepare food over a comal for their families. Revered as more than just a means of cooking, smoke represents a prayer or offering to the spirits.Popoca is a mix of heritage and play.     We went on a Saturday night at 8 p.m. Maja was our server and we had a great time. Our experience was 10/10. From the drinks to the atmosphere we enjoyed every second and stayed until they closed. We'll definitely be back.

    As a Salvadoran, I love this take on our cuisine! The pupusas are among the best I've ever had - the only ones better were at El Triangulo in Olocuilta, El Salvador. On the more modern side, the Pollo Campero is some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. It doesn't taste like the Pollo Campero in El Salvador, but you can see where the inspiration came from. Great drinks menu as well!

    I was invited to dinner at Bocanova in Oakland. The inviting picturesque view of the restaurant and surroundings piqued my curiosity of what I was about to experience. I received a warm welcome as I entered the restaurant by the staff. We enjoyed the amazing appetizers, and I am not a fan of Ahi Tuna, it was awesome. We followed the appetizers with our main course selection: grilled marinated lamb chops and Peruvian style chicken. Delicious! If you haven't visited Bocanova, please visit.
