Bar Chelou is a neo-bistro that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel, and fun. The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. If you plan to visit the Playhouse after dinner, please book a 5:30p reservation to ensure ample timing for your dinner. We also offer concession cocktails before a showing and during intermission. NEED TO KNOWWine corkage is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. Gift cards are available for purchase on our website.

    great bubbly, sandwiches, desserts and tea; perfect service. Next time (there will definitely be a next time!) I would ask to keep the scones and add fruit (decrease the hard to dismiss desserts). thanks for a great bday photo! (servers are excellent photographers).

    I’ve been to Bar Chelou a few times but they have really hit their stride. The service was on point, the drinks were fun and delicious, and the food was incredible. Every dish had an unexpected twist, from the mini peperoncinis in the salad to the tang of peanut butter in the carrots to the umami in the tempura mushrooms, lovely surprises all around! And they coursed everything out beautifully and got us to the show at the Playhouse right on time, chef’s kiss!

    An exceptional restaurant with outstanding flavors, a warm and inviting atmosphere, and incredibly friendly staff. The space was impeccably clean, and their unique and creative drinks were a highlight.♥️ One of the staff, Katherine, was particularly kind and professional.✨ They also offer a VIP room for more private celebrations, making the experience even more special.     The food was excellent definitely an explosion of flavors. You could see the quality and taste of the food was very good.  The food was a little slow coming out but worth the wait. The ambience was very nice Asian themed food server communicated well and gave us great recommendations. We will definitely be coming back to taste more dishes.
