   We dine frequently at J. Gilbert’s. We were quite surprised at our experience this visit. Our server appeared to be overwhelmed and neglectful at the number of tables she had to cover. She started us off with water but never came back to ask if we wanted anything else. We ordered entrees from the restaurant week menu. My food was burned on the outside and raw in the middle. Someone else brought our food out and our server never asked us how it was. We may take a break from J. Gilbert’s for a while.

   Food was great, but the service was very slow. Took us almost two and a half hours, even though we took our dessert to go.

   First visit to J. Gilbert’s during Restaurant Week and it is now a “favorite”. Ordered from the 3-course menu and every item was amazing — Crab cakes (lump crab), bourbon shrimp, filet Mignon, best asparagus ever. The carrot cupcake exceeded expectations.

   Went for Restaurant Week and both got the 3 course meal for $50. Salad, filet mignon and crème boulet. Was perfectly prepared but had to take the desert home as first 2 portions filled us. Although the restaurant appeared near capacity, the design and layout of the seating makes for quiet dining. Very happy with our dinner and will return for next occasion.

   We visited for Restaurant Week after not eating at J Gilberts for a couple of years. The food was good, but the steak was just okay. It was not excellent prime quality; it was just okay. The salad, sides, and dessert were good. The most disappointing thing about our visit was that we asked our server which bourbon was used for their Old Fashioneds. She didn't answer, and we said, just a basic bourbon will be fine. When the bill came, we were charged for a top-shelf, expensive bourbon that is a sipping bourbon, not a mixing bourbon. We asked if that was their basic bourbon for Old Fashioneds, and the server said that is what you asked for. There were four of us who knew the conversation. It was a turn-off. We will probably not go back. With the meat not being great, and mixing a high-end bourbon in a mixed drink and charging handsomely for it, it was disappointing.

    We were treated very well, iit was our anniversary dinner. Everyone was so friendly and professional. The food was outstanding, as always. The wedge salad is the best in the city, the steak was done perfect, and the crème brule is the best.
