   My first time here but partner has been many times and always raved about the food. Staff were friendly upon welcome. Took our order but food arrived before our drinks came to the table. There was no check back. The beef was delicious- the best I’ve had, but some of the veggies were too hard so couldn’t eat those. I don’t mean al dente; I couldn’t put my knife through them. Roasted potatoes were fine, not crisp. Yorkshire pudding was dry without enough gravy to soften it up. I realise these things are subjective. If the staff had done a check back, I would have asked for more gravy and would have enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding. One the male staff members brusquely asked me to move my scarf. I picked the scarf ip which was blocking his way and then tried to find who it belonged to! Not mine! Unfortunately for us, we’d booked at the same time as a large party leaving at the table right next to us. They stood around our table saying their goodbyes. They were in very good spirits which meant a lot of guffawing and laughing for the ten minutes it took them to leave as we ate our lunch. They staff were having to push past them and it knocked us or the table every time. Not the staff’s fault really but added to an overall mediocre visit. I’d give it another go as my partner is emphatic this is not the usual experience.

   Great service.. Soup starter delicious and very generous portion. Main course ravioli tasty but disappointing size of portion. When pointed this out to manager extremely happy with response. Lovely pannacotta for dessert and wine good too.

   We’d seen the restaurant on a Facebook post and that they did the best Steak & Ale pie, we were not disappointed! Cooked fresh taking about thirty minutes to prepare, we already knew this so we had a starter and we hardly noticed the 30 minutes. Friendly staff, beautiful surroundings and the music was perfect! It was our anniversary so it felt right to have the most amazing food, in such a carefully curated place. You must book ahead (we did), when we arrived, walk ins were being turned away as they were fully booked. York is worth visiting just for this dining experience alone!

   Very busy, service excellent, staff lovely. Food delicious. Very atmospheric decor. Loved it all, can't wait to go back!

   Great customer service and the food was delicious. We both had the steak and ale pie, and it was worth the wait as the menu says, and all made from scratch (although the wait didn't feel long). The other meals that others had, looked really good too. Definately recommend if you'd like a meal out.

   Been on several occasions and always a great traditional pub with great food Highly recommend if you're in York. Recommend you pre book

   Probably more than 6 years since our last visit, but the food matched our memories especially The Guy Fawkes pie. We won't be this long until our next visit

   Our first time dining but not our first visit. It was all we were expecting, kids meals were brilliant, the cheese burger was massive. My husband and I both had the steak and ale pie and oh my goodness it was incredible we both demolished it. An absolutely fabulous experience, we will definitely be back. Thank you!
