The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too. An imposing Victorian building set in acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream. The deck that wraps around the conservatory offers a rare opportunity in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view. In recognition of this, the Fishes was named Al Fresco Dining Pub of the Year in 2006, as well winner of The Public Vote in Oxfordshire Restaurant awards 2012 making it one of the best restaurants in Oxford.

It was a good visit at lunchtime. The staff are responsive and want to make your visit enjoyable. The size of the meals are large and it would be good to have more small plate options. We asked to share a starter and salad between my husband and I and that was plenty. The crab starter bring £16 is quite expensive for a starter but the amount of crab is huge and plenty for 4 people for a starter. Our visit was enjoyable and I can highly recommend.

This is my favourite restaurant in Oxford, a real gem which never fails to delight and make you feel life is looking up, even when it might not be ! The portrait in the Gents of Modest Mussorgsky is brilliant. Instantly recognisable and so displays the power of music. A supremely talented composer, who died young of an excess of drink; something I’ve been trying to avoid myself! Now to return from the Gents to the restaurant , the service is impeccable, the food just great and the wine list delightful. I am rarely moved to write reviews but this place is great. In the summer you sit in the walled garden , in the winter inside in just lovely surroundings. I even bought the hand cream !

We had the Christmas set menu so hard to say what the food is like overall. We will go again definitely to have a calmer experience as Christmas was just too full on for us. The staff were absolutely brilliant, went over and above to help with anything.
