Bubbling, thin crust pizzas, mini burgers, crisp salads, and craft cocktails...four great reasons to visit matchbox today. Centrally situated in the Downtown Silver Spring Shopping Center, matchbox offers a warm and lively neighborhood gathering place with an aesthetic reflecting the Silver Spring community and its growth at the turn of the 20th century. Comfortable dining areas featuring wood tabletops, leather banquettes, and raised booths, as well as a spacious bar area and flexible seating for large groups further emphasize the welcoming, energetic atmosphere that matchbox is known to cultivate at each restaurant. Anchoring the design is a wood-burning oven that catches the eye from any seat in the house as it fires up signature thin-crust pizzas within minutes. In warmer months, patio dining is available under a pergola, lending an indoor-outdoor vibe to the setting.

Three brothers and a brother-in-law from El Salvador realized their long-held dream of opening a restaurant together in November of last year. Jaime Sorto, his brothers Hugo and Jose Bonilla, and his brother-in-law Jose Zelaya looked for a name that symbolizes their concept of two cultures coming together. They chose La Malinche, the name given to a historical figure who has been at the center of controversy for centuries. The noble Mexican woman was enslaved and given to Hernán Cortés, a Spanish conquistador. She became his interpreter and confidante. Their son was viewed as the first mestizo, a child of mixed blood. Many Mexicans consider La Malinche or Doña Marina to have been a traitor, but today, she is also honored as the symbolic mother of the country’s mixed-race people. At La Malinche, all of the starters, vegetables, meats and seafood are served as Spanish tapas, called botanas in Mexico.

Food was very good but portioned tapa style which we didn’t know going in so our bill was much higher than we were planning. Overall it was a nice experience but pricey.

Really great and underrated restaurant in college park. I often forget how close this is to campus. I should definitely come here with friends more as it’s a nice space to hang out with really tasty food. A lot of vegan options for my vegan friends as well.

Great luncheon today. Lots of menu choices for winter warmers. I had the beef stew. Tender and tasted great, with a small salad and some bread. Just the right size portions, not to big and not to small. My wife had the chicken stew, and equally as satisfying. Our server was very attentive. We've been here before-sometimes good, sometimes not so much- and this is the best experience we've ever had.

We had breakfast at the Tabard Inn because it looked like a unique hotel that I wanted to check out, and it was within walking distance from where I was staying. The hotel was charming and unique in its eclectic furnishings. The dining room was quiet. The breakfast was almost half what I paid at the Jefferson Hotel the day before and twice as good. I had eggs over easy. I asked for my bacon well done. It was cooked to perfection and one of the best orders of bacon I ever had. The biscuit and hash browns, which were more like roasted potatoes, were delicious. The service was attentive but not overbearing. I would return the next time I'm in DC.
