“In Syrian culture, we can’t make any journey without first planning the food. If you decide to go to the cinema, you plan what you’ll eat. If you plan to visit your mother, you know that you’re going to eat. There’s no going out without eating something.”-Imad AlarnabImad Alarnab was a successful restaurateur in Damascus with three restaurants, plus several juice bars and cafes. In the war, Imad's restaurants were destroyed and he was forced to flee the country in search of safety for his family. Making his way from Lebanon through Europe, Imad shared his skills cooking for other refugees, up to 400 at a time, and found even in the most challenging times, his passion for food and bringing people together to celebrate life was strong.

What Old Compton Brasserie does, it does brilliantly: familiar but innovative food with some clever flairs of presentation, at very affordable prices, served efficiently by friendly staff. The Mon-Fri lunch offer of a choice of six easy dishes with a drink (alcoholic or non) for £15 is exceptional value - my Club Sandwich was world class!

Great food. Belly ribs and porterhouse were outstanding. Sides were delicious, though portions could be more generous for the price. The buttered greens were quite small for £6. Service was very warm and welcoming. Only feedback is regarding unavailable menu items. We tried to order several dishes that weren't available. It would be great if we got a rundown of everything unavailable as we were being seated so we could exclude them from our decision.
