An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

Kokkari (pronounced “Ko-Kar-ee”) is a small fishing village located on the islands of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is derived from the small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields. Its fertile soil and Mediterranean climate translated into an abundance of fresh produce as well as treasured seafood and game. Legend tells that Kokkari is the site where Orion, a mighty hunter and a young man of gigantic stature and great beauty, fell in love with the daughter of the king of Chios. For the love of her, Orion forged the island for wild game and seafood to prepare elaborate banquets in celebration of their love. Today, we hope you will enjoy your own celebration as you dine at Kokkari Estiatorio on food “fit for the Gods” prepared with an Aegean palate and the style of innovative California fare.

Wow, Nisei was fantastic! I think the service was a real highlight for me - the staff and chef were so personable. The food was gorgeous and delicious. I’m a huge fan of soups, so the ichiban chowder and the pine nut miso soup were definitely my favorites. The chowder foam was somehow light and hearty at the same time. Sourdough mochi was a great compliment- so delicious that I’d buy them by the dozen if I could. If you can, would definitely recommend the wine pairing - I found a new favorite wine (Lumier Winery, “Mitsuki” 2023) and learned so much from the sommelier. Overall, a 11/10 experience. I love going out to Michelin star spots for a special treat, but this will be the first time I return to a spot once they move to the next seasonal shift in their menu:)

From the moment we stepped inside Saison, we knew we were in for something extraordinary. The atmosphere was both intimate and elegant, setting the perfect stage for what turned out to be one of the most memorable dining experiences we’ve ever had. Even before our visit, the Saison team reached out to inquire about any dietary restrictions or personal preferences we might have. Their willingness to accommodate and even modify the menu to suit our tastes was a testament to their dedication to providing an unparalleled dining experience. Each course demonstrated a meticulous balance of flavors and textures, with every bite revealing a delightful new surprise. The highlight of the evening for me was their trout—by far the best I’ve ever tasted. The delicate, melt-in-your-mouth texture along with that "crisp" skin, it was just flawless. Also the desserts stole my heart. Nasir, a friend who works as a pastry chef there, crafted sweet creations that felt more like edible art than simple treats. His imaginative flair and precise execution turned each dessert into a decadent escape to a world of pure delight. The staff was warm, knowledgeable, and attentive, guiding us through each course with thoughtful explanations. From the careful consideration of dietary needs to the seamless execution of every dish, Saison delivered an impeccable, artful experience I would recommend to any food lover. I can’t wait to return and see what new culinary wonders await.

Kokkari never disappoints. I eat here regularly for business but this dinner was with my husband. We had the baked Feta with cherry tomatoes and the feta salad to start. All the starters are amazing and it is always difficult to choose among them. My husband had the lamb special - a whole lamb was roasted on site in the large fireplace spit in the dining room, and I had the lamb souvlaki. Both dishes were amazing. But the thing that sets Kokkari apart is the service. The servers have all been there for years and have a deft sense of engagement and timing. if you have questions, they are knowledgeable about every aspect of the menu and wine list. If you need to conduct business or have a romantic meal, they move around you with elegance and grace. We will go back as often as they will have us.

This restaurant is one of the best in San Francisco hands down. From the mysterious alley where it is located to the very high level of service, there is nothing about this restaurant that ever disappoints. The food is fantastic and the desserts are unique. The restaurant is vibrant but you also feel like you have privacy at your table. And the service — exceptional in every single sense of the word.
