In 1852, Matthew Perry, father of the USA Steam Navy, was assigned a diplomatic mission by American President Millard Fillmore to open Japanese ports to the west trade. The Admiral sailed four steam ships from Norfolk, Virginia to Japan. Along that trip the salt water stained the metal ships black. At that time, the Japanese had never seen such machines and referred to them as the “black ships”. This is where we take our name. Perry didn’t just open up Japan but all of Asia. This fateful meeting of the East and West cultures plays out in our menu.

We live close by and love Feng Shui as our local Asian. It’s a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Food is freshly-flavored, service feels like family, Chef is so caring and talented. We haven’t tried the sushi yet but love the Chinese and Thai menu items. The atmosphere has a buzzy vibe. It’s been busy each night we’ve visited.

I come to Niwa weekly and there’s a reason I always keep coming back! Joe, Steven, Alex and Angel are always wonderful and pay close attention to my allergies. The food is fantastic and not overpriced. Jimmy has stopped by my table a few times on separate occasions and is always an absolute gem to talk to. The food, staff and ambiance are 1000/10 and I will always recommend this place to everyone I know! If you can’t make up your mind when looking at the menu a few of my favorites are the filet, hanger steak, 44 farms short rib, pork jowl, zucchini, mushroom medley, ajitama eggs, wagyu deviled eggs and you can’t leave without getting a bag of the spicy OG Wagyu Boyz beef jerky, it is to die for!
