Best French Restaurants in San Mateo

This French restaurant, at the corner of Primrose and Chapin Aves in Burlingame, is well worth a 5-star rating on all counts. Modern, yet subtle, decor, unobtrusive period music in the background, excellent and varied selections, ample portions, and fantastic service provide a reason to return time and time again. Our party of three enjoyed the rack of lamb, the lobster ravioli, and the cassoulet. Each dish showed the attention and skills of a master chef. In addition to a la carte choices, they offer a prix fixe menu at $65 that provides an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert, with no menu exceptions, for this very sensible price. The restaurant offers a broad selection of wines and beer but does not have a full bar so anyone in need of a cocktail before dinner may feel temporary disappointment. Nonetheless, Chou Chou is fine dining!

Outstanding desserts! Food was very good, service was prompt and friendly.

Two of us enjoyed a lovely Christmas lunch. We began with the the onion soup who was delicious. We shared the seared sea scallops and vegetable risotto also delicious. For dessert I had the apple tartin and my daughter had the chocolate mousse which were excellent.. our server was friendly and professional and I think we just started a new Christmas tradition and will invite friends next year. On Christmas Eve, my husband and I enjoyed our dinner at the restaurant. Fortunately, we were able to secure a 5:30 p.m. reservation. Our server, Dante, was exceptionally courteous, attentive, and efficient. Despite the restaurant’s busy atmosphere, Dante ensured that our meal arrived promptly. The cuisine was of exceptional quality.

Marvelous experience here for lunch on the Monday before Christmas. Wonderful service, delicious pastas and salad. Ambience for the holidays was outstanding.
